Description
I photographed this scene during a journey with my family to China in 2010. Zhujiajiao old town, near Shanghai, is a well-preserved old town with hundreds of years of history around the shore of the vast Dingshan Lake. It was one of the largest commercial centers on the lower reaches of the Yangtze River during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. There are thousands of buildings in Ming and Qing style standing along the river, with 36 old stone bridges connecting nine streets in the old town to form a unique and beautiful waterscape.

Later, as part of my mindful meditation practice, I created a modern art painting from the photo, lightly layering and massaging abstract color over color until the piece was complete. I signed with love in the lower right corner. :) Now I offer this art for sale to so others can take a virtual journey, away from the stress of everyday life.

Shanghai, China sits on the banks of the Huangpu River. Sometimes called the "Paris of the East", Shanghai. In the early 20th century, the cosmopolitan city was a haven for Opium trading British who developed exclusive communities with their wealth earned from the drug trade coupled with cheap Chinese labor. In the late 1930's, the Japanese invaded and either leveled or took over many of the foreign communities. In 1949, the People's Republic of China was formed marking an end to over a hundred years of foreign occupation.

Today, although extremely modern, Shanghai maintains deep traditional Chinese practices and culture. It is currently a mix of Western and Eastern cultures. With it's booming prosperity, Shanghai appears to be a city of the future. Change and growth is occurring at lighting pace and new mega-skyscrapers grace the skyline.

Some of the more popular tourist areas are the riverfront Bund, the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, the Shanghai Ocean Aquarium, the Shanghai World Financial Center, the Jin Mao Tower, Shanghai Museum, Yu Garden, Yuyuan Market, and the picturesque canal towns of Zhujaijiao, Tongli, Nanxun, Moganshan, Putuoshan, and Lizhang.
